Toledo, Ohio is a small city of about 300,000, with multiple aging manufacturing facilities and a small downtown that rises above the western shores of Lake Erie. Barely a stopping point, freight trains headed east and west cross its farmlands on the outskirts of the urban landscape, headed to the distant markets on the coasts of the nation. Nestled inside the city, however, is an arts scene vibrant enough to rival any metropolis in the country. Toledo prides itself on providing an arts scene that is diverse and offers plentiful options for everyone. Nowhere can that be experienced more prominently than in the Toledo Symphony Orchestra.

Housed within the Toledo Museum of Art, the symphony calls the unique Peristyle Auditorium it’s home. This grand structure of columns and open interior space is well suited for the intricate melodies of the symphonic and popular music performed by the symphony. Organized in 1949, the symphony has grown to include 65 full-time musicians and plays host to renowned conductors and soloists from all over the world. In order to stay in touch with its community and keep up with the ever-changing digital world, the symphony has expanded its reach both online and in social media. Robert Cummerow, Digital Media Manager for the symphony, knew that their online presence needed to be every bit as accomplished and professional as the music they performed. They therefore decided to include an image video to their website. The ZEISS Otus series of lenses has been instrumental in helping to accomplish this task.
“We work hard to produce a product and a craft that is so pristine and so fine, and we thought, if we were doing that musically, why couldn’t we do the same with imagery?”
Robert Cummerow, Digital Media Manager

Indeed, the Toledo Symphony has worked hard to extend their reach into the digital domain. An arts organization is at its best when it’s connected to its community and the Toledo Symphony works hard to stay in touch with its supporters while courting new audiences. They understand that offering a full sensory experience is crucial in today’s connected world to best represent the magic of a live performance by the full orchestra.
“We wanted to use the Otus lenses from ZEISS for this project. We think that they gives us the capabilities to match what we’re doing musically with what we’re doing visually, and that makes all the difference to us and the longevity of our organization,” Cummerow added. ZEISS lenses is proud to support their efforts as they work to produce outstanding art.
