Time-lapse is a wonderful technique: It is hypnotic and enables the viewers to escape from their normal vision. It captures places with movements and jump over time, seasons, weather, and light in a way that we don’t normally get to see. By using this technique, photographers can tell stories from completely different perspectives.
Photographer Jeff Hsiao from Taiwan is the creator of a particularly marvelous time-lapse video. The former wedding photographer turned towards landscape photography in 2010, and he became to create videos showing various perspectives of Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.
When starting time-lapse photography, Jeff experienced various challenges : there were complex camera movements and precise angle settings – not an easy task to complete under the country’s subtropical climate. Also, fogs caused by humidity made the whole picture flat in terms of contrast, but he came up with his color temperature setting recipe and filter usage to overcome the challenges – which shares in this 5 minutes interview.
He finished his project in 2015, consisting 6,000 RAW images from 20 short sequences. The completed film reveals a crisp, colorful time-lapse view of Taipei, which certainly worths the effort: Foreigners usually see Taiwan as notable only for its technology, but in reality Taiwan is one of the few places where ancient religious practices and a modernist cityscape meet. This juxtaposition is expressed most clearly with one of the highest buildings in the world, the Taipei 101.
To capture this exciting essence of Taipei, Jeff used ZEISS lenses by his friends’ suggestion which Jeff could not be happier about. Crisp details and low distortion made post production easy for him, and the result is simply stunning. Make sure to watch this at full screen and HD!
